Men’s Hair Loss

Let’s face it, we lose our hair more than women do by the numbers. So it’s no head turner when we go bald but we feel like it is. And we DON’T like it.

We aren’t crazy either, whether or not people realize it, it’s not as acceptable as it might seem. Just look at the ladies in our Veralex panel we did and their comments when asked about scanning a room for possible men to talk to. It’s down right mean. The ladies were by themselves and they let loose. It that wrong? Yes. But it’s reality. Baldness in middle age men is around 25% in the general population. Yet, if you look at a group picture list of US Presidents since Eisenhower (since television came in) we have not elected a bald President. (Ford was not elected President) Fortune 500 CEO’s in 2010, in one article, had 22 bald CEO’s… OUT OF 500… 9 of which shaved their heads completely according to the article. That’s 4%. This is no coincidence. The ladies don’t line up for us at the club or wherever. It’s unfair. Alas… such is life.

And so here we are. Looking for something that is proven and works. Baldness and hair loss is often blamed on poor circulation to the scalp, vitamin deficiencies, dandruff, and even excessive hat-wearing. All of these theories have been disproven. It’s also untrue that hair loss can be determined by looking at your maternal grandfather, or that 40-year-old men who haven’t lost their hair will never lose it, albeit our experience, by chance, supports the maternal side of the family. More than likely not though. No matter, again, here we are, hoping a cure is discovered and waiting too long to do anything about it. Wanting to find a way to get our hair back BUT let’s consider the most common type of hair loss.

The Most Common Reasons For Men’s Hair Loss:

  • Aging also known as Male Pattern Baldness
  • Androgenic Alopecia also known as Male Pattern Baldness
  • Hormone Deficiency (low DHT) also known as Male Pattern Baldness
  • Metabolic Syndrome also known as Male Pattern Baldness
  • Genetics also known as Male Pattern Baldness

Okay, so a little sarcasm in this list but as you can see, and it has been said that, even IF they find a cure it will still most likely won’t work for everyone as Male Pattern Baldness (MPD) is broad. As a rule, the earlier hair loss begins, the more severe the baldness will become. Each has a clinical diagnosis but all have the same outcome. Hair loss can obviously also be caused by burns or trauma, in which case hair replacement surgery is considered a reconstructive treatment, and may be covered by health insurance. But other than that it’s considered an elective process and the burden falls to the patient. Certainly Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy can cause hair loss as well of course. We simply disagree that pattern hair loss is not a health issue for many. Depression and anxiety are very real and we have a studio full of clients who would testify that not only is this NOT elective but helped with their depression and other physical ails from the stress of not having their hair anymore. Some people may scoff at that but those people are in denial (tough guy) or have a full head of hair and can’t imagine not having it. Some shave their heads for ‘the look’ but even many of those would be bothered if they were to suddenly find out they can’t grow it back. Options. We want what anyone wants. Options. People are getting augmentations, botox, skin work and other cosmetic enhancements. They’re going to the gym to look better so they feel better. Buying the latest fashions and when you look good you feel good. Men want options too. And we have them. And if they’re elective then so be it.

Androgenetic alopecia, or common male pattern baldness, is the cause of 95% of hair loss in men. By the age of 35, nearly two-thirds of American men will lose some or all of their hair, and by the age of 75, almost 85% of men will have extremely thin hair. If you are one of the millions of men suffering from some from of hair loss, you are not alone. Although androgenetic alopecia is the most common type of hair loss in men, there are many other causes of hair loss and most of them are permanent as far as the original hair is concerned.

hair replacement treatments for men
Just remember in the meantime, while Rogaine, hair styling, and other cosmetic techniques may work for now, eventually you will lose too much hair to be able to replace it without notice from anyone. Of course if you’re already too bald on top for anyone to notice a sudden full look overnight then it won’t matter but many aren’t. And the most common comment we get is ‘I wish I didn’t wait so long’. Because they waited too long so they lost too much to tactfully transition for nobody to notice or they just hated the idea that they could have had all of those years with hair. Since the advent of media, success has almost always had a full head of hair. If you are bald or have thinning hair and wish to restore hair growth, please visit Alternative Hair Replacement. We have more than 22 years of experience and can help men of all ages have healthy, natural-looking hair once again. Contact us at 251-621-9199251-621-9199 to schedule a free consultation!
